buying geek - cheat sheet

Rob Pegoraro in the Washington Post offers some advice for buying tech toys this holiday season. He covers computers, cameras, and televisions.

For computers ...
Can you name any one program that you must use? If you can't, that's your cue to get a Mac.

For cameras ...
Hold out for two features that can prevent many common mistakes. Optical image stabilization keeps your shots steady and jitter-free, and face-detection focusing ensures that people's faces are clear, not the scenery behind them.

For televisions ...
Furthermore, you probably can't spot the extra pixels of 1080p resolutions on screens smaller than 50 inches. That doesn't mean you should refuse this feature-- above 42 inches, it's becoming standard -- but you shouldn't pay extra for it.
