My new year's resolution is to record more of what I see. I want to get out more and take more photographs. I am sure I could take more photographs around the house (as in project kitchen renovation - year 3). Get outside as often as I can to capture the world that I see and what I do not see. I keep a folder active during the year called singles which get tracks from places like KEXP, NPR All Songs Considered, Life of Best Fit, Soundcloud, and so on. Time to go through and pick some of the best. Then I check my favourite albums and find tracks that stand out and was perhaps the reason why I bought the album. I know I am missing a bunch but its a start.

With so much music out there and so many ways to get music, it is really easy to have the impulse of skipping to something else in 30 seconds or less. Music is slowly getting curated with blogs and podcasts. Its sort of like radio really however nothing lasts forever and favourite radio shows and podcasts come and go. Finding consensus for best albums is really a miss rather than a hit. I hear plenty of great singles. What about the rest of the album? How does one pick top albums anyway. I have two criteria.

#1 First time I hear an album makes me stop and listen.
#2 When I am doing this list, I feel guilty for not actually buying it yet (Sorry Feist, I have not been to the record store yet. Yes I can get it on emusic like I did for Ezekiel Honig and National Parks Project but I want a disc.)

Winter in the Assiniboine Forest is so great as new trails not accessible in the summer are available for hiking. Trouble is there is so much dead wood in forest that it is so easy to get tangled up.

The Arlington Street Bridge was closed for repair last week. Closed only to cars. Open to pedestrians. This was a unique opportunity to get some pictures and to capture some sounds (here and here) of the rail yard below.

Living in the North End of Winnipeg, this was my soundtrack in the summer. A mile away you could hear the rail yard when the house windows were open.
